Winter Pest Control Tips

Posted by:

Winter may still be months away, but when it comes to protecting your home and family from pests, there is no time for slacking.  It will be wise to plan how you can fend off a possible invasion of uninvited crawling in winter.  When the surroundings are extremely cold, many pests will hibernate, but not all of them. Some will look for a warm place with available food and water supply—like your home.  If you are unprepared, you might find yourself sleeping with spiders and scorpions, but don’t worry, there are ways to keep your home fortified against pests.

Seal all pest entry points

You may be unknowingly inviting pests to your home. A gap on the door, an unprotected chimney and plumbing invites pests into your home and they will enter without you noticing.  This is why it is important to seal any gap you can find on the exterior of your home. It could be a gap on the door, an open plumbing leading to the basement, the chimney, or gaps on the window seal. If you are too busy to inspect, you can contact a reliable pest control company or an exterminator to do this for you.

Don’t share your food

Aside from warmth, pests also invade homes for food. If you leave cereals in their cardboard boxes, ants and other pests will have a party and invite more pests to enter your house. Place all your food in airtight containers.  Insects have a keen sense of smell, so they can track down any food stuff just lying unprotected.  Placing your food in airtight containers will not only keep insects away, it can also save you money.

Fix the leaks

Pests don’t only need food, they need water too. An easy access to water will really attract pests and make them thrive healthy during the winter.  This is why you should make sure that your homes don’t have leaky faucets. Have a plumber check your homes water system to ensure that there are no damp areas caused by water seeping from the pipes.  If you have an exterminator you trust, you can call them instead of the plumber. They know where to look for the possible attractants of pests.

Contact a pest control company

You may be too busy to do all the checking yourself and you realize you need help in pest-proofing your home. If that’s the case, it is better to hire an exterminator to do the work for you. Exterminators are trained to deal with any kind of pest and they can ensure that your home will be safe from pests that may ruin the beautiful season.

Winter is a beautiful time of the year and you should enjoy it instead of spending all the time trying to hunt down household pests.  Contact a pest control company to eliminate the chance of your home being invaded by annoying pests.
