Pests to Watch Out for in Summer

For most people, summer means outdoor activities! Biking, camping, swimming and fishing are just a few of the favorite summer activities. Even if you don’t go far away from your home, it’s still nice to just hang out in the backyard and have barbeque or maybe set up an inflatable pool for the kids. Summer is the season where everything comes fully alive and active. Unfortunately, summer is also the season where some nasty and dangerous pests come out to breed.

Here are some of the summer pests you should absolutely watch out for:

Wasps like yellow jackets come alive during summer to find a place to start a colony. These insects are dangerous because they are aggressive and easily aggravated. They have been known to attack people with their long venom laced stingers, which are sometimes deadly to people who have allergic reaction to their poison.  Unfortunately, it is very difficult to remove wasps once they have established a colony and it is not advisable to attempt to remove them unless you’re a pro.  If you see a yellow jacket near your home, especially on places where kids play, call an exterminator right away.

Rats and mice

We already know about the health risks brought by these mammals from hell and they are around almost the entire year. However, rats and mice population thrive most during summer months because of people’s activities that involve food—barbeques, chips, juices and other food that summer revelers usually drop and leave behind.  The best way to keep rodents away is to remove access to food, especially those that fall on the ground.  Making sure the surrounding is cleaned after parties and gatherings will reduce the chance of your home being infested by rats.

Fruit flies are most active during summer because it’s the season where many fruits ripen and flies lay their eggs on fruits.  Flies are carriers of germs and bacteria and so you should avoid them. Unfortunately, flies are very quick and they are very alert. The way to stop flies during summer is to make sure that trash bins are well covered.  Another way is to keep fruits in the refrigerator and don’t leave them out where the flies can smell them.  If the fly infestation in your home is toodifficult for you to handle, you can contact trusted pest control company so they can take care of it.

Summer is also the time when mosquitoes come into a frenzy especially at night. Mosquitoes love a moist environment and warm weather. They are also drawn to your sweat.  It is during summer that they breed fast. Mosquitoes are very dangerous because they are carriers of some of the most deadly diseases known to man such as dengue and malaria.  To keep mosquito population in check, you should empty any stagnant water around the house and use repellent lotions at night.  You may also ask an exterminator to check your house for possible places where mosquitoes breed.

Summer is fun. It’s the time of activities and outdoors.  Unfortunately, summer pests threaten the joy of summer, but if you know what to do and what to watch out for, you will be able to get rid of them so you can relish the best of what this season has to offer.
